06 — The Western Question
The flagship both-sides section of this collection: St. Tikhon’s documented engagement with Johann Arndt’s True Christianity and Joseph Hall’s occasional meditations, and the unresolved historiographical debate over what it means — Florovsky’s “Western captivity” frame (with his warm particular verdict on Tikhon), Gorodetzky’s forms-not-substance defense, and Ivanov’s textual scholarship that deepens the evidence while declining the captivity framework. Positions are named; nothing is adjudicated.
The first file confines itself to the documentary record; the second sets out the evaluative debate under METHODOLOGY §4.2, with the confessional boundary of §4.1 stated: no party disputes the saint’s Orthodoxy — the debate concerns the genealogy of his idiom.
