05 — Eumenios and the Witnesses
The living witnesses through whom St. Nikephoros’s life is known: above all his fellow-patient and disciple St. Eumenios (Saridakis), the now-glorified confessor of the leprous who was his spiritual son and chief eyewitness, and the wider circle of contemporary testimony — Monk Simon, Metropolitan Neophytos of Morphou, and others — on which the documentary basis of his cult rests.
Tradition: Greek Orthodox (20th-c. Cretan monk; glorified 2012)
This section treats the chain of witness that makes Nikephoros a saint of firm attestation. The central figure is Eumenios Saridakis (1931–1999), himself a leper, Nikephoros’s novice for the last seven years, and himself glorified by the Ecumenical Patriarchate in 2022 — a disciple whose own sanctity both transmitted and confirmed his master’s.
