Marriage

The mystery of crowning: the union of a man and a woman raised, in Christ, into an icon of the union of Christ and the Church, and crowned toward the Kingdom of God.

Tradition: Pan-Orthodox

Marriage is the mystery that sanctifies the most intimate of human bonds and makes of it an image of the divine love. This section treats its theology and its pastoral discipline. The first file, the-mystery-of-crowning.md, reads marriage through Ephesians 5 as an icon of Christ and the Church and treats the crowns of the rite — crowns of joy, of martyrdom, and of the Kingdom. The second file, marriage-divorce-and-oikonomia.md, takes up, soberly and from both sides, the ideal of one marriage, the Church’s oikonomia permitting remarriage, and the penitential rite of second and third marriages, linking the hub essay on Marriage.
