08 — Glorification 1861

The relics found incorrupt on 14 May 1846 during the building of the new Zadonsk cathedral; fifteen years of synodal verification; and the glorification of Sunday, 13 August 1861 — the anniversary of the repose — Metropolitan Isidore of Novgorod and St. Petersburg presiding, before crowds in the hundreds of thousands, in the very year of the emancipation of the serfs: one of only a handful of canonizations in the entire synodal period.

The first file treats the finding and verification under the repository’s §3.5 discipline for relic claims, and carries the relics’ story through the Soviet seizure to the return of 1991; the second the act of glorification, its rarity, and the emancipation-year resonance.
