02 — From Timofey to Tikhon

The making of the saint: the sexton’s orphan Timofey Kirillov of Korotsk — nearly given away in famine, plowing for bread — enters the Novgorod school in 1738, receives the seminary surname Sokolov and a state-funded place, teaches Greek, rhetoric, and philosophy, is tonsured Tikhon on 10 April 1758, and by 13 May 1761 is a bishop: vicar of Novgorod as Bishop of Kexholm and Ladoga, then, from 3 February 1763, Bishop of Voronezh.

This section carries the life from birth to the eve of the Voronezh episcopate. The first file treats the childhood and schooling with their attestation; the second the tonsure, the Tver posts, and the first episcopate.
