Section 06 — Repose and the Jurisdictional Aftermath
Raphael reposed on 27 February 1915, mourned by the diocese he had built. Two years later the Russian Revolution cut the American Church off from its Moscow center and set in motion the fragmentation of the once-unified American Orthodoxy into separate national jurisdictions — the process in which Raphael’s memory became the symbol of a lost unity. This section tells his death, and then, soberly and without taking sides among the jurisdictions, the aftermath.
