02 — The Scholar-Bishop
Nikolai’s consecration as a bishop in 1919 and his service in the historic sees of Žiča and Ohrid, together with the wartime diplomacy of 1915–1919 that made him famous as an Orthodox voice in Britain and America.
This section covers the public churchman. First, the wartime missions: sent by the Serbian government during the First World War, Nikolai became a celebrated preacher and lecturer in England and the United States, the first Orthodox to preach in St. Paul’s Cathedral and an honorary Doctor of Divinity of Cambridge. Then the episcopate: consecrated in 1919, he served the sees of Žiča (in central Serbia, the coronation church of the medieval kings) and Ohrid (in Macedonia, the ancient archiepiscopal city), where his greatest writing was done.
