03 — The Preacher and Poet
Nikolai’s two most enduring literary achievements, both bound to Ohrid: Prayers by the Lake, his lyric-mystical prose-poem cycle, and the Prologue from Ohrid, the vast synaxarion, hymnody, reflection, and homily for every day of the year that became a household book of Serbian Orthodoxy.
This section treats the writer. Whatever the debates over his politics and his wartime texts, Nikolai’s stature as a devotional and homiletic author is not seriously contested: Prayers by the Lake is regarded as a classic of modern Orthodox spiritual literature, and the Prologue from Ohrid is one of the most widely used Orthodox devotional works in any Slavic language and, in translation, far beyond. Both were produced during his Ohrid episcopate.
