05 — The Resurrection Cathedral
The visible center of Japanese Orthodoxy: the Holy Resurrection Cathedral on Surugadai hill in Tokyo, consecrated in 1891 and known to the city as “Nikolai-do”; and the life of the Church in the Meiji era around it — a Russian foundation that had become, in a generation, a Japanese institution.
This section covers the great cathedral — its building, its place on the Tokyo skyline, its damage in the 1923 earthquake and rebuilding — and the Meiji-era Church gathered around it.
