08 — Glorification and the Cult

The translation of relics in 1998, the local glorification of 2 May 1999, and the general glorification of the whole Russian Church at the Bishops’ Council of October 2004; and the popular veneration that made Matrona perhaps the most-visited modern Russian saint — reported soberly and sourced, including its controversies.

Tradition: Russian Orthodox (canonized 1999/2004)

These files cover the glorification — prepared on the basis of the corrected canonical Life — and the sociology of the cult that grew at the Pokrovsky (Intercession) Convent, honest about the folk-religion tensions and the “Matrona and Stalin” icon controversy without polemic.
