02 — Student Years and Monastic Formation

The years between the tonsure of 1916 and the professor’s chair: study in revolutionary Petrograd, the Oxford years and the famous unsubmitted Dostoevsky thesis, the doctorate at Athens in 1926, and the making of the young monk into a theologian and seminary teacher.

This section follows Justin abroad. The Serbian Church, scattered by the war, sent its promising young monk to study — first to the Theological Academy of Petrograd on the eve of the Russian Revolution, then to Oxford (where his doctoral work on Dostoevsky was never submitted, for reasons that are themselves disputed), and finally to Athens, where he took his doctorate in 1926 with a dissertation on St. Macarius of Egypt. It then traces his return to Serbia and the years of seminary teaching and editing in which the dogmatician took shape.
