03 — The Hermit of Hozeva
The last decade: John Jacob’s care of the Romanian pilgrims and the Romanian hermitage of St. John the Baptist by the Jordan (1947–1952), his entry into the Monastery of St. George of Choziba (Hozeva) in Wadi Qelt in 1952, and his final withdrawal to the walled cave-cell of St. Anne, where he lived his last years in extreme asceticism with his disciple Ioanichie Pârâială until his repose in 1960.
Tradition: Romanian Orthodox (20th-c. hermit of the Judean desert; glorified 1992)
This section covers the culmination of the saint’s ascetic trajectory: from a pastor of his fellow Romanians to a walled-up hermit of the Wadi Qelt, completing the ancient movement from the common life to the greater solitude.
