02 — The Holy Land
The pilgrimage of 1936 and the years in the Judean wilderness: the departure from Neamț with two companions, the early period in a desert cave near the Jordan, and the central formative years at the Great Lavra of St. Sabbas in the Kidron gorge, where the Romanian monk was ordained and entered the full inheritance of Palestinian monasticism.
Tradition: Romanian Orthodox (20th-c. hermit of the Judean desert; glorified 1992)
This section covers the middle of John Jacob’s life: the move from Moldavia to Palestine and the decade in which the monk of Neamț became a hermit of the Judean desert, formed by the same landscape and the same lavriotic tradition that had produced St. Sabbas and the golden age of Palestinian monasticism.
