07 — The Confessor Under Occupation

Patmos and the Dodecanese under Italian rule (1912–1943) and the war years: Amphilochios’s defense of the Greek language, faith, and identity, his covert catechetical work, the exile it cost him, and his pastoral care of his people through the war and the union of the Dodecanese with Greece in 1948.

Tradition: Greek Orthodox (20th-c. elder; Ecumenical Patriarchate)

This section sets Amphilochios in the political history of his islands. The first file treats the Italian occupation, his defense of Greek language and Orthodox identity, the workshop-as-school, and the exile of 1937–1939, verifying the specifics against the record and attestation-pinning the more particular claims per §3.5. The second follows his shepherding of his people through the German occupation, the famine, the war’s end, and the long-awaited union of the Dodecanese with Greece in 1948.
