02 — Monastic Formation

The making of a monk: his years of ascetic formation on Patmos, a period on Mount Athos and the Great Schema of 1913, his return and ordination; and his election as abbot (hegumen) of the Monastery of St. John the Theologian in 1935.

Tradition: Greek Orthodox (20th-c. elder; Ecumenical Patriarchate)

This section follows Amphilochios from the fervent young novice of 1906 to the abbot of 1935. It traces the discipline that formed him — the asceticism, the Athonite period, the Great Schema, the reluctance to be ordained — and then the abbacy that gave his ministry its institutional base and precipitated his collision with the Italian occupying power.
