05 — The Feasts of Manifestation
Two Great Feasts are feasts of epiphany — of God made manifest: Theophany (6 January), when the Trinity is revealed at the Jordan and the Son is proclaimed from heaven, and the Transfiguration (6 August), when the disciples on Tabor see the uncreated glory shining through Christ’s flesh. The one manifests the Persons of the Trinity; the other manifests the divine energy. Together they are the great feasts of the vision of God.
Tradition: Pan-Orthodox
Purpose
These feasts show God to human eyes — at the Jordan in the voice, the Son, and the descending Spirit; on Tabor in the uncreated Light. The section connects them to the theology of theosis and to the Palamite defense of the vision of the divine energies.
