08 — The Canons and the Councils in Orthodox Life

Beyond their dogmatic definitions, the councils produced a body of canons that, together with the Quinisext Council of 692, form the backbone of Orthodox canon law; and the seven councils together function as the doctrinal spine of the Church, commemorated liturgically in the Sunday of the Fathers and the Triumph of Orthodoxy.

Tradition: Pan-Orthodox

This section turns from the dogmatic to the canonical and liturgical afterlife of the councils. The first file treats the canonical corpus the councils produced and the special case of the Quinisext (Trullo) Council of 692, which supplied canons for the Fifth and Sixth Councils and whose ecumenical status the Orthodox affirm but the West did not. The second treats how the seven councils function as the doctrinal backbone of Orthodox faith and how the Church remembers them in her worship.
