09 — Glorification and Legacy

The destruction and rebirth of Optina, and the glorification of its elders: the Soviet museum and camp on the monastery’s grounds, the 1987 return to the Church and the sober tragedy of the 1993 Paschal murders; and the glorification of the fourteen Optina Elders (1996 local / 2000 general), the feast, and the relics.

Tradition: Russian Orthodox (Optina synaxis glorified 1996 local / 2000 general)

This closing section brings the story to the present. The first file follows Optina through its Soviet fate — museum, agricultural use, and wartime NKVD camp — to its return to the Church in 1987 and its rebirth as a monastery, including the sober account of the murder of three of its monks on Pascha 1993. The second file treats the glorification of the elders: the local canonization of the synaxis in 1996, the general glorification in 2000 together with the New Martyrs, the feast of the Synaxis of the Optina Elders on 11/24 October, and the relics.
