The schism grew from soil centuries in the making: the loss of a common language, the divergence of rite, discipline, and canon law, the escalation of the Roman see’s claims on forged foundations and Gregorian ideology, and the Frankish politicization of the Filioque from the Libri Carolini to its Roman adoption around 1014. This section supplies the causes that Sections 03–05 see erupting.
