Marian Hymnography

Orthodox worship carries its Mariology chiefly in song. This section treats the great Marian hymns beyond the Akathist: the theotokia woven through every office and the Axion Estin of the Divine Liturgy (with its Athonite apparition tradition); and the Sub tuum praesidium, the earliest known Marian prayer, together with the Paraklesis canons of intercession.

Tradition: Pan-Orthodox (Byzantine hymnography)

Overview

The Church’s teaching about the Mother of God lives less in her treatises than in her liturgical poetry, and this section gathers the Marian hymns that are not the Akathist (treated in Section 03). The first file follows the theotokia — the Marian strophes appointed throughout the daily offices, and the dogmatika that teach the Incarnation in song — and the Axion Estin of the Divine Liturgy, whose Athonite revelation-tradition is pinned per the attestation rule. The second file reaches back to the oldest Marian prayer of all, the Sub tuum praesidium preserved on a Greek papyrus whose date is genuinely disputed, and forward to the Paraklesis canons, the warm supplicatory hymns of the Dormition fast. Throughout, the section ties to the dedicated Theotokos collection, whose treatment of these hymns it extends.
