The Feasts of the Theotokos

This section surveys the Church’s calendar of the Mother of God: first the four Marian feasts among the Twelve Great Feasts, set in the order of the liturgical year and sorted by what rests on canonical Scripture and what comes only through the Protoevangelium of James and the transitus tradition; then the secondary commemorations — the Protection, the Life-Giving Spring, the relic-feasts of Constantinople, the Synaxis, and the icon-days — each pinned to its earliest attestation.

Tradition: Pan-Orthodox

The Orthodox veneration of the Theotokos is not an abstract devotion but a calendar. The Church year opens (8 September) and closes (15 August) with her, and between those two feasts it keeps a dense round of great and lesser commemorations. These two files map that calendar. The first treats the four feasts of the first rank, taking special care to mark which are grounded in the Gospels and which in second-century and later tradition — for the Nativity and the Entrance of the Theotokos have no canonical basis at all. The second gathers the secondary feasts, attaching each vision, relic, and shrine-tradition to the earliest named source that records it, and noting where a feast flourished in one Orthodox world while remaining marginal in another.
