06 — Protomartyr Theology
Stephen is the protomartyr — the first to die for the confession of the risen Christ, and the one whose death set the pattern every later martyrdom would follow: a death conformed to the Passion, a spirit committed to the Lord, a prayer for the killers. These files draw out the theology of the first witness: what it means that Stephen is the first, and the great patristic theme — Tertullian’s “the blood of the martyrs is the seed of the Church,” and Augustine’s reading of Stephen’s prayer as the seed from which Paul was raised.
Tradition: Pan-Orthodox (Protomartyr)
The title martys means “witness,” and Stephen is the witness who first sealed his testimony with blood. The Church reads his death not as a tragedy but as the prototype and fountainhead of the whole martyr-tradition — the model on which the Martyrdom of Polycarp and every later martyr-act would be patterned, and the theological seed of the conviction that the Church grows by the death of her witnesses. This section treats Stephen as protomartyr, the Christ-conformity and “firstness” of his death, and the seed-theology that finds in his dying prayer for Saul the secret origin of the Apostle Paul and of the Church’s growth through persecution.
