The Gift of Discernment
St. Sophia of Kleisoura (1883–1974) is remembered above all as a clairvoyant eldress who named pilgrims and their sorrows before they spoke, greeted arrivals with “Welcome, my birds,” and left behind a small treasury of terse spiritual sayings. This section gathers the accounts of her discernment and her recorded counsel, reported strictly as what her spiritual children and the devotional Life attest — not as archival fact.
Tradition: Greek Orthodox (Pontic Greek; 20th-c. woman ascetic)
The gift of discernment (Greek diakrisis) — the reading of hearts, the foreseeing of events, the exact word to a particular soul — stands at the center of St. Sophia’s reputation, as it does for the recent clairvoyant elders to whom she is often compared. But this is also the region of her life where the sources are most devotional and least documentary. Her biography reaches us almost entirely through 20th-century hagiographic accounts resting on living witnesses — above all her spiritual daughter Kyriaki Kioskeridou (d. 2022), the monastery community at Kleisoura, and the English-language transmissions of John Sanidopoulos (Mystagogy) and OrthodoxWiki — none of which is independent archival documentation of the wonders they report (see The Sources for Her Life).
For that reason this section applies the repository’s §3.5 attestation-pinning discipline rigorously: every clairvoyance and miracle account is presented as what a named source or witness attests, never asserted as a documented event, in the same manner the compendium’s methodology prescribes for all hagiographic material (cf. St. Xenia methodology; METHODOLOGY §3.5). The aim is not to diminish St. Sophia but to honor her truly — to report the cult’s own testimony as testimony, and to let the reader weigh it.
