Section 07: Miracles and Visions

The wonders, visions, and posthumous cult of St. Sergius of Radonezh, catalogued throughout by the layers of his Life — the restrained core of Epiphanius the Wise (c. 1418) and the amplified redactions of Pachomius the Serb (1430s–1440s) — so that each wonder is reported as what its earliest attestation records, not flattened into a single inventory of equal claims.

This section sorts the miraculous material that gathered around the saint, in life and after death, by its source stratigraphy, in keeping with the methodology’s rule that hagiographical claims are pinned to their earliest written attestation and miracle accounts are reported as what the sources attest, with the source named.

Lifetime Miracles The miracle corpus of the Life by layer: the spring, the boy raised, the healings, the clairvoyant “mutual bow” with St. Stephen of Perm, the visitation of the Theotokos with the Apostles, and the liturgical visions of the concelebrating angel and the divine fire in the chalice
Posthumous Cult Repose (1392), the 1422 uncovering of relics and the new stone cathedral with Rublev’s Trinity, the rise from local cult to general veneration by 1452, and the posthumous miracle collections — above all the apparitions of St. Sergius during the 1608–1610 siege as Palitsyn’s Skazanie tells them

How to Use

  • Read Lifetime Miracles first; its opening on the source layers is the interpretive key to the whole section.
  • Read Posthumous Cult for the relics, the canonization process, and the siege miracles that fixed Sergius as Russia’s heavenly defender.
  • Both files depend on the source-criticism set out in The Life and Its Layers; read that section for the full Epiphanius/Pachomius analysis.
