Section 06: Spirituality

The spiritual core of St. Sergius: the theology of his Trinity dedication and the ascetic profile preserved in his Life. Because Sergius left no writings, his spirituality must be read from the Trinity church he built, the icon painted in his honor, and the labors and visions recorded by Epiphanius — and from the later interpreters (Florensky, Fedotov) who put words to his wordlessness. This section pins each claim to its source layer and traces the famous attributions honestly.

Tradition: Russian Orthodox (canonized by 1452)

Contents

File Topic
Trinity Devotion The theology of the Trinity dedication; the honest tracing of the famous “gazing upon the Holy Trinity… the hateful divisions of this world” sentence to Trubetskoy (1916) and Florensky (1919) rather than to Epiphanius; Rublev’s Trinity “in praise of Sergius” and the 1551 Stoglav testimony, with the repository’s [Disputed] dating note kept
Labor and Humility The ascetic profile per the Life: manual labor as prayer; the rotted-bread wage story; the refusal of episcopal honor; the visions (the Theotokos with Peter and John, the birds, the liturgical fire); the silence about method and Fedotov’s kenotic reading of Sergius’s wordlessness

How to Use

  • Read Trinity Devotion for the theological meaning of the dedication and a model of source-tracing applied to a beloved but mis-attributed quotation.
  • Read Labor and Humility for the ascetic life the Life attests and for what the Russian tradition drew from a saint who left no writings.
