Section 01: Foundations

The foundational section of the St. Sergius of Radonezh reference guide, covering the saint’s origins: his Rostov childhood as the boy Bartholomew, and the wilderness beginnings on Makovets hill that made him a monk. These files establish the biographical ground — drawn from the Life by Epiphanius the Wise (c. 1417–18) as reworked by Pachomius the Serb — on which the later sections build.

Tradition: Russian Orthodox (canonized by 1452)

Contents

File Topic
Rostov Childhood Bartholomew, son of the boyars Kirill and Maria (themselves canonized, 1992); the contested birth date (c. 1314, with 1319/1322 variants); the family’s ruin in the Moscow–Rostov politics and move to Radonezh; the miracle of learning with the elder and the prosphora (and its Nesterov afterlife); the parents’ deaths and Khotkovo
Makovets Beginnings The hermitage on Makovets hill (c. 1337) with brother Stefan and the Trinity dedication; Stefan’s departure; the years alone — the bear story and the demonic assaults per the Life; tonsure as Sergius by the abbot Mitrofan (~age 23); the gathering of the first twelve; the reluctant abbacy and ordination (c. 1354)

How to Use

  • Start with Rostov Childhood for the saint’s origins and the source-critical ground rules (Epiphanius, Pachomius, the dating problem).
  • Read Makovets Beginnings for the monastic foundation, which leads directly into the cenobitic reform of Section 02.

A Note on Sources

Following the repository methodology §3.5, hagiographical episodes (the learning miracle, the bear, the demonic assaults) are reported as what the primary Life attests, pinned to Epiphanius the Wise and named as such — never asserted as independently documented history. Contested dates carry their scholarly variants.
