08 — Spiritual Teaching

The spiritual message associated with St. Seraphim of Vyritsa: the famous prose-poem of providence “From Me This Has Come,” whose authorship is genuinely contested, and the recorded counsels of the elder on humility, repentance, and endurance under persecution. These files present the teaching and weigh the question of what is securely his.

Tradition: Russian Orthodox (20th-c. elder; Soviet period)

The teaching for which the elder is loved is a teaching of providence and endurance: that everything that befalls the soul — affliction, loss, persecution, even injustice — comes by the permission of God and can be received as from His hand, for the soul’s salvation. This message is crystallized in the prose-poem “От Меня это было” (“From Me This Has Come”), the single most famous text associated with his name — and a text whose authorship is contested. This section presents the poem and its providential message with the authorship question squarely flagged, and then gathers the recorded counsels of the elder, distinguishing the secure from the doubtful.
