06 — Prophecies
The prophecies and clairvoyant counsels attributed to St. Seraphim of Vyritsa — a body of material that is at once central to his popular fame and the most source-critically treacherous part of the whole tradition. These files handle the prophecies critically, distinguishing what the early biographies record from later and internet-borne accretion, and treat the accounts of his clairvoyant counsel pinned to their sources.
Tradition: Russian Orthodox (20th-c. elder; Soviet period)
Much of the contemporary popularity of Seraphim of Vyritsa rests on prophecy: predictions about the future of Russia, the revival of the Church, the trials and restoration to come, and on stories of his uncanny knowledge of the hearts and futures of those who came to him. This is also where the cult is most exposed to invention. Prophetic sayings circulate freely on Orthodox websites and in pamphlets, often without any source, frequently in mutually contradictory forms, and sometimes demonstrably borrowed or fabricated. This section applies METHODOLOGY §3.5 and §4 rigorously: the prophecies are weighed by provenance, the doubtful are flagged, and the clairvoyant counsels are reported as what the biographies relate, not as established fact.
