Section 05 — With Tikhon and the American Church

Sebastian’s work as head of the Serbian Mission unfolded within the one multiethnic Russian archdiocese led by St. Tikhon, alongside St. Raphael of Brooklyn and the other builders of pre-1917 American Orthodoxy. This section treats the structure of the Serbian Mission, Sebastian’s elevation to archimandrite under Tikhon, and — told soberly and non-partisanly — the jurisdictional developments that followed the fragmentation of the American Church.

Tradition: Serbian Orthodox / American (glorified 2015)

Sebastian belongs to the generation of the one American Church — the unified Russian Mission that held Serbs, Rusyns, Greeks, and Arabs together before the Revolution. This section situates him among his contemporaries, above all Sts. Tikhon and Raphael, and narrates the jurisdictional story that followed in the even-handed manner the repository methodology requires (§4.2).
