Section 03 — The Missionary

The heart of the collection: Sebastian’s founding of St. Sava’s church at Jackson, California in 1894 — the first Serbian Orthodox church in the Western Hemisphere — and the ceaseless missionary travels that took him across California, the Pacific Northwest, the Mountain West, Alaska, and beyond, planting parishes and gathering the scattered Orthodox of a whole continent.

Tradition: Serbian Orthodox / American (glorified 2015)

This section is where Sebastian’s historical achievement is concentrated. The first file treats his best-remembered single act, the founding and consecration of St. Sava’s, stating the “first Serbian church” claim with the precision it needs. The second treats the pattern of his whole active ministry: the itinerant, continent-spanning, pan-Orthodox missionary labor that earned him the title “Father of Serbian Orthodoxy in America.”
