08 — The Relics and 1594
The afterlife of Sava’s body: the three and a half centuries of veneration at the monastery of Mileševa, where his incorrupt relics drew pilgrims and made the shrine a center of Serbian Orthodoxy; and the Ottoman burning of those relics on Vračar hill in Belgrade in 1594 — an act of terror that, far from extinguishing the cult, made Sava a symbol of Serbian endurance and consecrated the ground on which the great Temple of Saint Sava now stands.
Tradition: Serbian Orthodox
