Section 02 — Scholar and Priest
Sent abroad for the higher education his own Patriarchate could not give, Raphael studied at the Theological School of Halki in Constantinople and then at the Kiev Theological Academy in Imperial Russia, becoming a learned priest and archimandrite. His scholarship was inseparable from his advocacy: he was a partisan of the Arab cause within the Patriarchate of Antioch, and a costly stand on that cause helped turn his path toward Russia.
Tradition: Antiochian Orthodox (Arab-American diaspora)
