Section 04: The Charism of Insight
The gift for which St. Porphyrios is most famous — and which this collection treats with the most care: the charism of spiritual insight (diorasis, popularly “clairvoyance”), by which he is reported to have perceived the states of souls, things hidden, things at a distance, and things to come. Per the methodology governing this guide (METHODOLOGY §3.5), no such account is asserted as historical fact: each is reported as what a named witness or source attests. And the Elder’s own framing is given the prominence it had in his own teaching — that such gifts come only by the grace of God, that they are never to be sought, and that the desire for signs and powers is a door to spiritual delusion.

| Accounts of Clairvoyance | The documented accounts of his insight, pinned to their named witnesses and sources: the reading of souls in confession, the perception of distant and hidden things, the knowledge of illness and of things to come; the multi-volume Witnesses testimony collections; and throughout, his own insistence that this is grace, not a power of his own |
| The Warnings | His repeated cautions against seeking gifts, signs, or charisms; the danger of plani (spiritual delusion) in those who desire powers; the priority of humility and love over any gift; and his counsel to turn from preoccupation with the spectacular toward the ordinary, hidden labor of loving Christ |
How to Use
- Read Accounts of Clairvoyance for the attested record of his insight — reported as testimony, with witnesses named, never as adjudicated fact.
- Read The Warnings for the indispensable other half of the subject: the Elder’s own grave cautions about gifts, without which the accounts of his charism are badly misread.
- The foundational account of how he received the gift is in The Elders and the Gift; the pastoral use of it in Reading Souls in the City.
