07 — The Irish Church

The church that grew in Ireland after Patrick, and Patrick’s real but limited place in its making. The first file treats the monastic character of early Irish Christianity and the modern scholarly caution about “Celtic Christianity” as a popular construct. The second sets the Irish church in its relation to Rome and the wider Church — including the famous Paschal (Easter-dating) controversy — and corrects the romantic image of an isolated, anti-Roman “Celtic Church.”
