Verification Log: st-paisios

One line per disposition, per METHODOLOGY.md §3.6. Format: date · file · claim · disposition · sources.

Scope: web-verified citation overhaul of the [Verify] tags in passions-and-virtues.md and logismoi.md. Most tags were “[Verify: exact wording]” on quotations from St. Paisios’ Spiritual Counsels (6 vols., Holy Hesychasterion of St. John the Theologian, Souroti; English trans.). General finding: the Souroti English text renders the Elder in plain, often colloquial prose; the punchy aphorisms in these files are largely modern popularizations, while the underlying imagery and teaching are authentic. Quotations not locatable verbatim were converted to attributed paraphrase (quotation marks dropped, attribution and content kept); misattributed images were replaced with the Elder’s documented ones; one synergy maxim and one Desert-Father saying were labeled as such. Volume titles confirmed: Vol. 1 With Pain and Love for Contemporary Man, Vol. 2 Spiritual Awakening, Vol. 3 Spiritual Struggle, Vol. 4 Family Life, Vol. 5 Passions and Virtues, Vol. 6 On Prayer.

Batch-wide structural finding: St. Paisios’s Spiritual Counsels is a six-volume series (Souroti, Holy Hesychasterion “Evangelist John the Theologian”), the sixth being Vol. 6: On Prayer (Eng. 2022). Prayer material previously cited to Vol. 2 (Spiritual Awakening) has been reassigned to Vol. 6, the dedicated prayer volume — an implausible volume assignment, now corrected. Vol. 3 (Spiritual Struggle) structure confirmed: Part 3 “Sin and Repentance,” Part 5 “The Power of Confession” / “The Spiritual Physician of the Soul” — repentance/confession material anchored there.

Scope: web-verified citation overhaul of the two 04-divine-providence files, ~36 [Verify] tags. Most tags marked exact-wording on quotations attributed to St. Paisios’ Spiritual Counsels (6 vols., Souroti). Because the published English Spiritual Counsels are not digitized, verbatim attribution was sought in published English excerpts (orthochristian.com, johnsanidopoulos.com, pemptousia.com, saintsophiadc.org, spzh.eu, oodegr.com, orthodoxwitness.org) and in Hieromonk Isaac’s biography; quotes whose substance is attested but whose wording is unlocatable were converted from quotation to paraphrase with attribution retained; quotes untraceable to any Paisios source were labeled or removed.

Web-verified citation pass over the [Verify] tags in four files (~23 tags). The dominant finding: the polished, aphoristic English “quotations” of St. Paisios circulating online (and reproduced in these files) are overwhelmingly modern paraphrases that do not match the published Souroti / Holy Hesychasterion translations. Where the substance is genuinely attested, quotes were converted to paraphrase with attribution retained (Corrected); where untraceable or misattributed, they were labeled as such (Apocryphal). Two items confirmed with exact published wording: the philotimo definition (Epistles, Souroti 2002) and the “spiritual rust / conductor of grace” metaphor.
