06 — The Controversy
The genuinely contested heart of Nikolai’s reception: the wartime text Words to the Serbian People Through the Dungeon Window and the charge of antisemitism. This is the collection’s both-sides flagship, written in the spirit of METHODOLOGY §4 — the texts quoted, the critics and defenders each given their strongest form, and no adjudication offered.
This section treats the single most serious question about St. Nikolai. It is not resolved here, and it is not meant to be. The two files are complementary and should be read together: the first examines the contested 1944 text and the dispute over whether Nikolai even wrote it as we have it; the second lays out the charge of antisemitism in full — the incriminating passages, the critics (above all Jovan Byford), the defenders and their arguments, the disputed rescue claim, and the state of the scholarly literature.
The collection’s stance, stated plainly: it venerates the saint the Serbian Church glorified in 2003, and it does not soften, suppress, or explain away the charges against him. It presents the evidence and the arguments on both sides at full strength and leaves the weighing to the reader and to the Church’s continuing reception. Neither a prosecutor’s brief nor a defense counsel’s — a fair record.
