06 — The Western Sources Adapted

The most debated chapter of Nicodemus’s work: his Orthodox reworkings of two Western Roman Catholic devotional books — Unseen Warfare, from the Italian Combattimento spirituale of Lorenzo Scupoli, and the Spiritual Exercises, from the Italian adaptation of Ignatius of Loyola by Giovanni Pietro Pinamonti — and the scholarly debate, alive to this day, over what this use of Latin sources means for the great champion of patristic Orthodoxy.

unseen-warfare-and-spiritual-exercises.md The flagship account: the two adaptations and their Catholic originals; what Nicodemus changed and why; the layered authorship of Unseen Warfare (Scupoli → Nicodemus → Theophan); the Kadloubovsky & Palmer English translation; and the scholarly debate over the Latin sources, presented even-handedly with named positions.
discernment-in-borrowing.md The deeper question: Nicodemus’s principle of discernment in borrowing — the Orthodox “baptism” of useful material from any source — set against the worry that the borrowing imported a foreign spirit; how the tradition has weighed his judgment.
