05 — Hagiography vs. History
The methodological heart of the collection, modeled on the repository’s Xenia flagship. These files state plainly how a beloved saint resting on a legendary base is to be read: the discipline that reports the Passio and the dragon as legend while venerating the saint, pinning every claim to its source per METHODOLOGY §3.5; and the theological reflection on what the Church claims in venerating a saint whose cult is firm and whose history is essentially unrecoverable — a cult without a history.
Tradition: Pan-Orthodox (Great Martyr; virgin-martyr)
Marina is, with St. George, the clearest test in the repository of a particular discipline: how to honor a saint whose surviving record is frankly legendary. The companion model is Blessed Xenia, whose methodology file is the repository’s flagship statement of the cult-firmer-than-biography case (see St. Xenia: Methodology). Marina pushes the same problem in a different direction: where Xenia’s record is thin, Marina’s is fabulous — a dragon, a bound demon, a cycle of preserving miracles — and the question is not “what little can be known?” but “how does one venerate a saint whose legend the Church itself has long flagged as legend?” These files answer it.
Files in This Section
| File | Description |
|---|---|
| Reading the Marina Tradition | The method: how this collection reads the Passio and the dragon — pinning each claim to its source as legend, inheriting the Church’s own Gelasian and Golden Legend reservations, and venerating the saint without certifying the legend; modeled on the Xenia flagship. |
| The Cult Without a History | The theological reflection: what the Church claims in venerating Marina; how glorification receives a cult rather than certifying a biography; and why a saint whose history is unrecoverable can be venerated with full confidence. |
