08 — The Companions
Mother Maria was glorified in 2004 not alone but together with three companions of the rue de Lourmel: her son Yuri (George) Skobtsov, the chaplain Fr. Dimitri Klépinin, and the essayist Ilya Fondaminsky. This section presents the four glorified together and the common witness that binds them.
Tradition: Russian Orthodox (Paris émigré; glorified by the Ecumenical Patriarchate, 2004)
The story of Mother Maria is properly the story of a community, and the Church received it as such: the glorification of 2004 was a glorification of four. This section introduces her three companions in the rescue and the martyrdom and reflects on the shared witness — the refusal, unto death, to disown the persecuted neighbor — that is common to them all.
