06 — Ravensbrück

Mother Maria’s last two years were spent in the women’s concentration camp at Ravensbrück, north of Berlin, where fellow prisoners remembered her as a source of courage and hope. She died there on 31 March 1945, days before the camp’s liberation. This section presents the camp years and the death soberly, and treats the tradition that she took another woman’s place in the gas chamber as the uncertain, undocumented tradition it is.

Tradition: Russian Orthodox (Paris émigré)

This section is written with deliberate restraint. The horror of Ravensbrück needs no dramatization, and the manner of Mother Maria’s death is genuinely uncertain. The two files present what the survivor testimony gathered by her biographer attests — her endurance, her ministry to fellow prisoners, and the fact of her death at the end of March 1945 — while carefully flagging the famous substitution tradition as pious and unproven.
