01 — Foundations
The biographical ground of St. Macrina the Younger: the saint-dense Cappadocian–Pontic household across three generations, and the betrothal and vow by which a girl of twelve turned from the world to God. Everything in this section descends, as its single source, from her brother St. Gregory of Nyssa’s Life of Macrina.
Tradition: Pan-Orthodox (Church Father / Mother)
St. Macrina the Younger (c. 327 – 379) was the eldest of the children of Basil the Elder and St. Emmelia, and the elder sister of Sts. Basil the Great, Gregory of Nyssa, and Peter of Sebaste. She left no writings; she is known almost entirely through two works of Gregory — the Life of Macrina and the dialogue On the Soul and the Resurrection — in which she is “the Teacher” (hē didaskalos) and “the philosopher” of the family. This section establishes the family that produced her and the early decision that set the shape of her whole life.
The household is treated as the matrix of the family’s later theological flowering; the betrothal and vow as the existential root of Macrina’s “philosophy.” Both files foreground that their facts come from Gregory’s biography and are pinned to it (METHODOLOGY §3.5).
