09 — Legacy and Reception
The veneration of Macarius across the Orthodox and Coptic worlds, and the modern scholarship that re-mapped the corpus bearing his name. The cult — feast, relics, the saint honored East and in the Coptic Church — and the critical work of Dörries, Stewart, Plested, and the translators that recovered the real history behind “Macarius.”
Tradition: Pan-Orthodox (Church Father)
This closing section gathers the two faces of Macarius’s afterlife. The first file treats his veneration: the dating of his life and feast (January 19 in the East, 27 Baramhat in the Coptic calendar), the relics, and the cult that honors him alike across the Chalcedonian Orthodox Churches and the Coptic Orthodox Church — a saint genuinely shared across the great divide of 451. The second file surveys the modern scholarship that, over the past century, untangled the historical Macarius from the corpus under his name: Villecourt’s discovery, Dörries’s “Symeon” hypothesis, Stewart’s reframing of the Messalian question, Plested’s reception-history, and the critical editions and translations (Dörries–Klostermann–Kroeger, Maloney, Desprez) that made the whole problem legible. Together they close the collection where it began — with the discipline of telling the man and the corpus apart.
