09 — Glorification and Veneration

St. Joseph’s formal recognition by the Church and a sober weighing of his place in it: his glorification by the Ecumenical Patriarchate in March 2020, some sixty years after his repose, and his feast; and an honest assessment of his stature, the character of his sources, and the questions his cult and the practice of his descendants raise — offered provisionally, as the judgment of a moment still close to the events.

Tradition: Greek Orthodox / Athonite

This closing section treats the Church’s reception of Joseph and this collection’s own final judgment. The first file records the act of glorification — the decision of the Holy and Sacred Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in March 2020 — and the establishment of his feast, setting the act in its context and noting what such a glorification does and does not claim. The second offers a sober assessment: it gathers the collection’s honest conclusions about the reliability of the sources, the severity of the eldership, the questions raised by the diffusion of his tradition, and the provisional character of any judgment on a saint glorified within living memory, while affirming the substance of his significance.

The assessment is deliberately measured. Joseph was glorified only in 2020; his disciples’ disciples are living; the practice of his spiritual descendants is a subject of contemporary discussion. The collection receives the Church’s glorification and does not second-guess it, but it offers its own historical and critical judgment as what it is — a contemporary weighing, not the settled verdict of the Church’s long reception.
