07 — The Demonstration of the Apostolic Preaching
St. Irenaeus’s second surviving work, lost for some seventeen centuries and recovered in an Armenian manuscript in 1904, is the earliest catechetical summary of the Christian faith that we possess. This section presents the Demonstration itself — its rediscovery, plan, and value — and reads it as a model for catechesis: narrative-first theology, Trinitarian in shape and baptismal in frame.
Tradition: Pan-Orthodox (Church Father)
Overview
Eusebius knew that Irenaeus had written, besides Against Heresies, a “demonstration of the apostolic preaching,” but the work vanished so completely that no ancient author is found quoting it. Its reappearance in 1904, in a thirteenth-century Armenian codex at Erevan that also preserved Books IV and V of Against Heresies, restored to the Church its oldest catechism — a short handbook, addressed to a certain Marcianus, that narrates the whole faith as the single saving economy of God from creation to Christ and then proves it from the prophets.
The two files approach the work from complementary angles: the first as an object — its rediscovery, two-part plan, and place as the earliest catechetical summary, with passages from Behr’s PPS 17; the second as a method — narrative-first catechesis, Trinitarian in spine (Dem. 6–7) and baptismal in frame, set beside Cyril of Jerusalem, Chrysostom, and the modern recovery of catechesis.
