01 — Foundations
The life and context of St. Irenaeus of Lyons (c. 130–202): his formation in Smyrna under St. Polycarp, his episcopate in Gaul, his role as peacemaker, and the honest state of the evidence for his life and death. These files establish the biographical ground on which his theology stands.
Tradition: Pan-Orthodox (Church Father)
St. Irenaeus of Lyons is the foundational theologian of the post-apostolic Church and its decisive witness against Gnosticism. What gives his witness its peculiar authority is biographical: as a boy he heard St. Polycarp of Smyrna, who had himself known the Apostle John. Irenaeus thus stands, by his own testimony, as a living link in the chain of apostolic tradition he spent his life defending. This section traces that life from Asia Minor to the missionary frontier of Gaul, pinning hagiographical claims (notably the martyrdom) to their earliest attestation rather than asserting them as historical fact.
