04 — The Scientist-Missionary
The wide-ranging mind of Veniaminov: the ethnographer-linguist whose Notes on the Islands of the Unalaska District won the Demidov Prize and made him a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences; and the maker whose carpentry, clock-making, organ-building, and meteorology served the mission as fully as his preaching did.
Tradition: Russian Orthodox / American (canonized 1977)
