09 — Legacy and Reception
Ignatius’s place among the “Apostolic Fathers,” the early collection of his letters by Polycarp, the reception chain through Irenaeus, Origen, and Eusebius, and the modern critical scholarship and liturgical commemoration. From Polycarp’s gathering of the letters within living memory of their author to the standard editions of Lightfoot, Schoedel, and Holmes, this section traces how Ignatius has been read and venerated.
Tradition: Pan-Orthodox (Apostolic Father)
The letters survived because Polycarp of Smyrna gathered them and sent a collection to Philippi, telling the Philippians he enclosed “the letters of Ignatius which were sent to us by him” (To the Philippians 13) — the foundational external witness, within living memory of Ignatius. From there the reception runs through Irenaeus, Origen, and Eusebius to the modern critical editions, and on into the Orthodox liturgical year, where Ignatius the God-bearer is commemorated on December 20. This section closes the collection by tracing that legacy and the present state of scholarship.
