08 — Spirit, Soul, and the Modern Mind
The polemical and apologetic edge of his thought: his resistance to the two great temptations of nineteenth-century educated religion — a cold rationalism that dissolved the spiritual world into metaphor, and a warm Romanticism that mistook the movements of feeling and imagination for grace; and the narrow, sober path he set between them.
This section gathers the writings in which Brianchaninov engaged the modern mind directly: the Supplement to “A Word on Death” on the nature of created spirits (his answer to a rationalizing science), and the broader ascetical critique of dreamy, imaginative, feeling-driven religiosity, against which he set the discipline of attention, repentance, and patristic obedience.
