07 — The Soul After Death
The most influential and the most contested part of his legacy: his teaching on the state of the soul after death, and above all the aerial toll-houses (mytarstva), set out at length in A Word on Death. This section presents that teaching as a theologoumenon — defended by the saint and received in much of Russian and ROCOR piety, questioned by serious modern Orthodox voices — and declines to adjudicate.
This section follows METHODOLOGY §4 and the repository model file seraphim-rose/04-soul-after-death/aerial-realm.md: it distinguishes dogma from theological opinion, presents defenders and critics with sources, and does not settle the question. The toll-houses are presented explicitly as a theologoumenon, never as dogma.
