04 — The Ascetical Writings
The shape and substance of the corpus: the great miscellany of The Ascetical Experiences, in which he distilled a lifetime of patristic reading into essays on prayer, repentance, and the passions; and The Arena, his focused offering to monks, the most widely read of all his books in English.
This section surveys the two principal bodies of his ascetical writing — the multi-volume Asketicheskie opyty and the Prinoshenie sovremennomu monashestvu (The Arena) — describing their composition, structure, and governing themes, and the English translations through which they reached the wider Orthodox world.
